The Mystical South Follow the guide to Floréal and Curepipe for bonanza shopping. Curepipe, the second most important town is the heaven of shopping lovers. Shopping can be done in the factory and duty free shops of Floréal. Cashmere, carpets, jewellery, ready made clothes are available for good value for money. There will be a first stop in Curepipe at the ship model factory. Ship models from Mauritius are quite famous. When shopping is over in Floréal, there will be a short visit of Curepipe and Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct crater situated at 650 metres above sea level. It offers a beautiful view on the Moka range and right up to the sea. From Curepipe proceed to Grand Bassin or Ganga Talao, a sacred place of worship to the Hindu community. It is a crater lake surrounded by luxuriant forests. Drive along the National Park to see Black River Gorges where endemic forests are the natural habitat of protected fauna and flora species. Wild Adventure This outing will take you to the South East and Mahébourg, an area rich in historical landmarks. Visit the Naval Museum of Mahébourg with its exhibits relating to the fierce battles between the French and English fleets and retrieved from sunken ships. The bay is quite impressive in this part of the island and you will see several historical monuments, such as the ones commemorating the battle of Vieux Grand Port and the abolition of slavery. The day will start with a visit to the market of Quatre Bornes, on the Central Plateau.This typically Mauritian market is colourful, popular as it is The spot for great textile and local crafts bargains. After the hustle and bustle, the shaded country roads will take you downhill to Yemen for a safari. You will be driving in a Nature Reserve full of monkeys, stags and birds. You may come across moorhens, partridges, guinea fowls and Egyptian geese around the ponds. You will drive uphill and downhill, taking in the breathtaking views on the savannah and the west coast. Refreshments will be served at a kiosk before going to the bat sanctuary. This safari is done in a 4 x 4 vehicle or a specially fitted bus. Safari Nature – The Secret South This 4 x 4 wheel drive will take you from the South West to the North West allowing an insight in the interior of the island. From the “Seven Waterfalls” of Henrietta, to Tamarind Falls, Simonet Mountain, Le Morne and The Higher Plaine Wilhems, the landscape keeps changing. You will discover Bassin Blanc: a water filled crater covered with overhanging white clouds, and Rochester Falls in the middle of sugar cane and banana fields. Proceed towards Gris Gris, a beach covered in grey mist caused by crashing wavesand drive along Senneville Bridge, the oldest and highest bridge on the island. Cross more sugar cane fields to admire a unique sight: Nature Bridge, a natural bridge shaped in the rock by eroding waves. The trip ends at Blue Bay where you will be allowed to admire one of the most beautiful coral gardens of the Indian Ocean from glass bottom boat. Ile Aux Aigrettes – Eco Tourism Since 1965 the island is a Nature Reserve and has been managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. It is the last refuge of the ebony forest that was, once, common around coastal Mauritius . It is the sanctuary of animal and plant species unique to Mauritius and not to be found anywhere else in the world. Animals once known to have existed on the island have been reintroduced such as the pink pigeons, the giant Aldabra tortoises, the Round Island Telfair’s skinks. All these activities are carried out with all required safety measures and in compliance with international regulations. - Pacha et Harris Wilson Cruise on a Catamaran around Coin de Mire Island (a sanctuary of sea birds) before anchoring in the turquoise lagoons of Ilot Gabriel and Ile Plate, 14 kilometres from Grand Bay. The crystal clear lagoons offer a marine diversity which give great pleasure to divers and is a paradise for swimmers (snorkelling equipment available on board). Non swimmers can take a shuttle boat to the beach. This cruise in open sea from mainland to smaller islands is highly attractive and spent in beautiful surroundings. La Magicienne This is a motorised catamaran which cruises only in the north east lagoon. It leaves from Grand Gaube in the north east and sets sails for the coral reef. You will be able to snorkel close to the anchored catamaran. The variety of corals and fish make it a rare experience. Before and after lunch you will have time to discover the still untouched Ilot Bernache. Sailing in between the islets with a panoramic view on the high grounds is a fine mixture of pleasure and unusual beauty. The beauty and tranquillity of the South West Coast is not to be missed. The catamaran leaves Black River for Tamarind Bay where sometimes dolphins come and swim around the boat. Sail back to a spot called Harmony, close to the reef barrier where you will be able to snorkel or swim in two to three metre deep water.
